Crankshaft grinding
N.W.Geeson

Generally a machine shop that grinds crankshafts will centre the shaft between the rear flange and the front main bearing journal. Then they will grind the CENTRE main bearing and support it on a nylon rubbing block whilst the other mains are ground. If this is done on one of these R-R shafts it will not be true.

This R-R shaft should be centred between the rear flange and the front damper bearings, this keeps the damper bearing centred and does not unduly wear the crankshaft / camshaft gears. After this set up, either mains No 2 or No 7 is ground, then supported and the journal grinding continued from the reground initial main bearing across the shaft. This is not a normal technique for a shop to use. Consequently the shafts are often ground untrue.
